The Museum of Sports and Olympic Glory was established in 1972 at the Kazakh State Institute of Physical Culture. In 1999, after the Committee on Sports and Physical Culture moved to the capital, the museum moved to the Gardener Tatarinov’s House. The museum exhibits cups, medals, photographs and other rarities of Kazakhstani athletes, won by them at the world championships, Europe, major international tournaments. The central place in the museum’s exposition was reserved for the Barker Cup, won by V. Zhirov at the Olympic Games in Atlanta (USA) and awarded to the best boxer of the Olympic cycle. Currently, the Barker Cup is kept in the Museum of the President of Kazakhstan. The museum has three halls: “Independent Kazakhstan”, “World, Europe and Asia Champions” and “Healthy Lifestyle”. The building was built at the end of the XIX century. Presumably the architect was P.V. Gourde. Annexes were later made from the south and west sides of the house. The building appears in the literature as the Treasury house of the director of the orphanage. After 1917, the building was adapted for healthcare facilities. The sanitary-epidemiological station of Alma-Ata was located here. From 1992 to 1999, the building housed the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan. The building is a one-story log cabin from the Tien Shan spruce with an attic and has a rectangular outline in plan. The building is installed on a brick basement and stone foundation. The walls are plastered and whitewashed. The main entrance is accented by a porch with a visor of a large extension. The square volume of the attic has a four-pitched roof, supported by wooden beam structures, which are covered with roofing iron, and a dormer window. The structure along the entire perimeter is crowned with a multi-profile cornice from overhead boards. It is a monument of wooden architecture and an example of the merchant buildings of the city of Verny. On November 10, 2010, the new State List of Monuments of History and Culture of Local Significance of the City of Almaty was approved, at the same time all previous decisions on this subject were invalidated.
