Nurgisa Atabayevich Tlendiev (1925-1998) was a Kazakh composer, conductor, dombrist, teacher. People’s Artist of the USSR (1984). People’s Hero of Kazakhstan (1998).

Akhmet Zhubanov considered his first and main teacher: “Zhubanov taught me everything: to love and understand folk and classical music, taught me to work and find joy from creativity, taught me to love life in all its manifestations. I owe him what I have become.” It is no accident that Akhmet Zhubanov gave his dombra to the aspiring musician Nurgisa, as the best student. During the war, Tlendiev volunteered for the front. After demobilization, he studied at the Faculty of Folk Instruments of the Kurmangazy Kazakh State Conservatory (1948-1950), in 1952 graduated from the conducting faculty of the Moscow Conservatory (class of Professor N.P. Anosov), trained at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

In 1953-1961 – Chief conductor of the Kazakh Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai, in 1961-1964 – chief conductor and artistic director of the Kazakh State Academic Orchestra of Folk Instruments named after him. Kurmangazy. Then he was the director of the Abai Opera and Ballet Theater, and from 1968 to 1981 — the editor-in-chief of the musical editorial office of the Kazakhfilm film studio. In 1981-1998, he was the chief conductor and artistic director of the Kazakh State Folklore and Ethnographic Orchestra of Folk Musical Instruments “Otrar Sazy”, organized by himself at the suggestion of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Kazakh SSR D. Kunaev. The orchestra became a laureate of the World Festival of Youth and Students, a laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize (1985), a laureate of the Zhambyl International Foundation Prize (1996).

Nurgisa Tlendiev is the author of more than 500 musical works in various genres: songs, kuis, romances, overtures, poems, cantatas, opera, ballet, etc.
Member of the Union of Cinematographers of the Kazakh SSR. He taught at the Kazakh State Conservatory. Kurmangazy (Professor).
In 2010, the monument to the Kazakh composer, Halyk Kaharmany, Laureate of the State Prize of the Republic of Kazakhstan, conductor Nurgisa Tlendiev was opened. The monument is a full-length figure of the composer on a pedestal. The author is a laureate of the state prize, a knight of the Order of “Kurmet”, architect Kazbek Zharylgapov. The base is made of granite, the sculpture is made of bronze, the total height of the monument is 9 meters.
